Love Is In the Air Jesus Garcia—A Mining Hero Many of our readers enjoy mineral collecting as well as viewing rock and fossil displays. Being avid rockhounds ourselves, we recently took the opportunity to visit the Geology Museum at the Colorado School of Mines in Leadville, Colorado. We went there expectating to see some impressive mineral collections. We saw that and even more. Not only were there some great mineral displays, but the museum was very educational, both scientifically and historically. There were exhibits showing how various minerals are used in our daily lives. For example, you could push buttons to see that gypsum is found in wallboard, copper in electrical appliances, and graphite in pencil lead. Much of the museum was devoted to the history of mining in the State of Colorado. Particularly interesting was a series of handmade panoramas depicting the development of gold mining techniques from the early gold panning days, to the use of modern mechanical equipment. I also really enjoyed the elaborate 3-foot castle covered with minerals, as well as the replica of the Ice Palace which once stood in Leadville. A wing of one of the upper floors had several walls lined with plaques of men and women who had contributed to the advancement of mining. At first glance, the plaques looked rather uninviting, but the stories contained in them were inspirational. One story that stood out was about an engineer by the name of Jesús Garcia. At the age of 18, Jesus went to work for the copper mines at Nacozari, Mexico. The son of a mechanic, Jesús was very interested in trains, and started out as a stoker in the engine room. He was promoted to engineer and hauled ore, men, and equipment from Agua Prieta, through Nacozari, and on to Pilares. On the 7th of November, 1907, a train loaded with two cars full of dynamite (used to blast ore from the rock) was preparing to leave Nacozari for the copper mines. Suddenly, the stoker reported to Jesús that fire from the stove had ignited the dynamite bags. Jesus jumped on the train and headed it away from Nacozari to avoid catastrophe. A couple of miles away, the fiery train exploded, rocking the village, and destroying the train and its 13 passengers, including Jesús. However, the town of Nacozari was spared a terrible destruction. Jesus’ heroic efforts are memorialized each year on November 7, which to this day is a national holiday in Mexico.

While the exhibit is open daily during Crown Center hours, Saturdays will feature special events: Live animals will be on stage in the Crown Center Atrium at 12 pm and 2 pm on January 21 and 28; in February, actors from the Coterie Theatre will create an enchanted world of favorite children’s stories at 12 pm and 2 pm (Atrium); in March, hear animal stories in Lunch Land at 1 pm and 2 pm and hang out with costume characters from 12 pm to 4 pm. Freshwater mussels, collectively called shellfish, clams, bivalves and unionids, belong to an important group of animals known as molluscs. Mussels occur in a wide variety of aquatic habitats, from small ponds and streams to large rivers and lakes. Mussels serve as indicators of water quality. All are affected by pollution, although some are more tolerant than others, so they can be used to monitor levels of water borne pollutants. They efficiently remove silt and suspended organic particles and serve as a basis for studying environmental change over time. Mussels themselves serve as food for other animals such as fish, muskrats, raccoons, otters and birds. Christmas Items—Half Price We have some great items marked at half price while supplies last.
