Will You be our Winner?

You may have noticed our newsletter was a little late getting out this month. November was a little crazy with the installation of a new point of sale system to help us better manage our inventory. Countless hours have been spent keying in each product’s description and price so we have a better idea of what is selling, and we can hopefully do a better job of keeping our shelves stocked with the products you love.

In connection with this momentous project, we are having a contest during the month of December to see if anyone can guess which item in our store is our best seller and how many of it we sell during the month of December. (No pumping our employees for answers < grin >.) The person who comes the closest to having the right answer will win a $50 store gift certificate.

Shake Up a Snow Globe

Everyone loves watching the mesmerizing movement of tiny snow crystals floating through overturned snow globes. We are pleased to announce that we have added a completely new line of snow globes with adorable little Indian figurines inside.

These cute snow globes are very affordable at $5.50 and up. Due to the low price and beautiful detail, these snow globes are drifting away quickly. We anticipate they will be a very popular item during the Christmas season and beyond. Make sure to come and pick one out while our selection is still good!

Hippopotamus Hype

This time of year we often see parents roaming around the store in frantic search of a hippopotamus gift for that child who has fallen in love with the “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” song.

You will be happy to note that we have several different styles of plush hippopotamuses in stock, as well as carved hippo pens, hippo figurines, and hippo sculptures for the older hippo enthusiast.

Did you know a real hippo can weight nearly 10,000 pounds? The hippopotamus is strictly a vegetarian. Its diet consists mainly of grasses.

A mother hippo will give birth to a new calf after carrying it for 227 to 240 days. The calf can weigh from 60 to 110 pounds at birth. Calves nurse underwater and are frequently seen riding upon their mother’s backs while the mother is in the water.2

If you want Santa to bring you a hippopotamus for Christmas, make sure you’ve got a big chimney!

Have a Very Merry Christmas!

Converting Wood to Rock

After our trip to Denver for the September mineral and fossil show, we took a side trip to Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, about 30 miles west of Colorado Springs. There we saw several huge petrified redwoods excavated from a hillside (above).

Almost 35 million years ago, enormous volcanic eruptions buried the then-lush valley west of Pikes Peak and petrified the redwood trees that grew there.

In order for wood to become petrified, it must first be covered with such agents as volcanic ash, volcanic mud flows, sediments in lakes and swamps, or material washed in by violent floods - by any means which would exclude oxygen and thus prevent decay.

A number of mineral substances (such as calcite, pyrite, marcasite) can cause wood to petrify, but by far the most common is silica. Solutions of silica dissolved in groundwater infiltrate the buried wood and through a complex chemical process are precipitated and left in the individual plant cells. Here the silica may take a variety of forms, such as agate, jasper, chalcedony or opal.

Within 10 to 40 million years, the silicified wood further dehydrates and crystallizes into microcrystalline quartz (chert). Factors such as temperature and pressure may speed or slow the process, but eventually the opal of the silicified wood becomes chert.

The beautiful and varied colors of fossil wood are caused by the presence of other minerals that enter the wood in solution with the silica. Iron oxides stain the wood orange, rust, red or yellow. Manganese oxides produce blues, blacks or purple.

Petrified wood specimens are truly one of nature’s fascinating works of art.1
